It was founded in 1846 and incorporated in 1878. The population was 3,742 at the 2010 census. ==History== Lafayette was founded in 1846 by pioneer/entrepreneur Joel Perkins, who previously had lived in Lafayette, Indiana and named it similarly for the hero of the American Revolution, Le Marquis de Lafayette (General Lafayette). The post office was established in 1851,〔 and the city was incorporated by the Oregon Legislative Assembly on October 17, 1878.
